Week 14: Broadwater Fishing Chasing Mulloway Fish

I was up fishing on the Broadwater last week completing one of my Tackle Tip segments chasing one of my favourite species the Mulloway. The Broadwater sits between the Gold Coast and Brisbane and is truly one of the great fishing spots in Australia.

First up my job was to catch as many live pike as possible. I trolled and cast the shallow weed beds with a small shallow diving minnow on one of the Shimano Ripper spin combinations that are available at Anaconda.

It wasn't long before I had half a dozen pike swimming in the live well. The prime fishing time is either side of the turn of the tide and so my aim was to get to my spot an hour before the bottom of the tide. The locations I like to fish on the Broadwater are at the mouth of both entrances.

The Seaway and Jumpinpin are two great areas to chase Mulloway. On this occasion I decided that because the tide change was around 2 pm that Jumpinpin which is the northern entrance would be my pick. Hopefully less boat traffic up there would give me a better chance.

I found a nice spot just outside the entrance on the northern side and slipped the Min-Kota electric in the water.

These motors are incredible and this 80lb model was powered by twin deep cycle Century batteries so had loads of grunt to keep the boat anchored under its unique GPS Spot Lock system. My baits hit the water and I patiently waited. The rig was a ball sinker sitting on top of a heavy duty swivel on a 55 pound trace. Two Gamakatsu 6/0 hooks were set in the pike and set on the bottom in about 10 metres of water.

I was looking at the swell rolling in when my Shimano combo roared and a Mulloway powered off. Lifting the rod the fish made several strong runs before the beautiful silver fish appeared from the murky water. At around 10 kilos the Mulloway often called Jewfish would have been around 7 years old. They can grow to over 40 kilos and I had a smile from ear to ear as the lucky fish was released back to the depths.
