What type of bike light do I need?

The amount of light you may need on your bike can depend on your surroundings. In brightly lit areas of town, you may need a less strong bike light than you would if driving in rural areas where there is not much surrounding light. Brightness is measured in lumens. For a front light, you can manage with 70 lumens if you're in town - that's enough to make sure you're seen. In the country or on ill-lit roads where you need to see where you're going, look for something brighter - 100 lumens or more. Lights of up to 1000 lumens are available, so you are spoilt for choice.

What else do I need to consider?

Here are some other things you may want to take into account when choosing your bike lights:

Colour: Always remember: white lights for the front of your bike, and red for the back.

Battery: Some lights still use batteries, but more and more bike lights are now rechargeable.

Mount: Do you opt for lights that are permanently fastened to your bike, or do you want (or need) to have lights that you can unclip when you get to your destination? Both types are available her at Anaconda.

Extra protection: In some cases, you may want to add additional protection when driving your bike. You could think of lights that can be fitted to your head (and over your cycling helmet), reflective strips or even reflective clothing such as a high-vis vest with reflective strips.

Lights of off-road cycling

Riding a bike off-road, at night, offers a whole new dimension to your riding experience! Those familiar trails will feel like adrenaline-inspiring new routes, as they look a whole lot different under the cover of darkness. For night time off-road riding, you will need a powerful front light to ensure that you don't fall foul of rabbit holes, tree trunks or low hanging branches.

So what kind of light do you need for off-road bike rides? As a bare minimum, you want a powerful bar mounted front light, ideally with an output upwards of 1000 lumens. These off-road specific lights will have a wider beam pattern too, so they can illuminate the whole of the trail in front of you. Some high powered off-road lights feature the ability to change the light level so you can light up the world on descents, while conserving battery life on uphill rides.
