Inside the life of fishing expert Lee Rayner
Anaconda brings you an exciting interview with fishing expert Lee Rayner. Best known for his work on Tuna Bluefin Tactics, Fishing Adventures and Snapper Fishing Tactics, we caught up with fishing expert and host of Fishing Edge Lee Rayner to ask him the burning questions you’ve been dying to ask. From his beginnings in fishing to his current favourite species, get inside the life of Lee Rayner with Anaconda.
How old were you when you first started fishing?
I started fishing at about three years of age, my dad mostly taught me how but I was a serial pest to anyone I could learn stuff from.
First fish you caught?
It was a toadfish - caught off the rocks next to Merimbula wharf in NSW.
Do you remember the first piece of fishing gear you bought with your own money?
It was a Daiwa Millionaire 6HM baitcaster, which I still have to this day - it cost me $120.00 and it took m about a year and a half to save up for it.
Did you have a fishing idol growing up?
As a small kid I was starstruck by Malcom Florence who made a fishing show called Big Fish Down Under on good old VHS tapes, there was also a show called A Fisherman's World by Ron Calcutt. I couldn't get enough of them as he fished a lot in NSW around places I knew of catching fish like tuna kingfish and snapper.
Probably my biggest inspiration however was Steve Starling, his Videos, magazine articles and his books just dragged you into them with amazing pictures and information and tales of the journeys he'd been on.
I remember getting this massive book he wrote called Fishing Australia, its pictures and writings became my bible and hardly a day would go by when I didn't look at it. I have been so fortunate to meet and fish with so many incredible anglers who are all true legends in my mind, but one that really stands out is Kaj Busch "Bushy" this guy can literally catch fish in a bucket and is the one who really taught me how to fly fish properly - although im still not very good at it.
Last fish you caught?
Probably a yakka or slimy mackerel. Recently I've been catching bait to use when I take my kids and friends out fishing to help them catch big Kingfish. I've been so lucky to catch a bunch of big fish in my life so I really enjoy seeing and helping others to experience stuff like that too.
Favourite species to target?
This is a hard question for me to answer but I do love Swordfish, they grow huge and are the toughest fish in the sea. I also have a special spot for Trout, I grew up catching them in the Snowy Mountains so they are just a fish I love to catch. Some others would include Yellowtail Kingfish, Big Flathead on lures and Blue Marlin - those things are mental!
What was your last fishing trip?
Fishing out of westernport chasing Big kingfish with my two daughters - the girls caught and released three 105, 112 and 117 cm.
Favourite fishing destination?
Anywhere there is fish, preferably big ones.
Favourite fishing technique?
Whatever is going to catch me the fish but I do love lure fishing.
Favourite species to eat?
Flathead, King George Whiting, Kingfish, Golden Snapper.
