Week 13: Old Town Kayak Fishing for Sea Bass
I've just arrived home from a fishing trip in the Coffs Harbour, Bellingen region of Northern NSW. The barometric pressure was high which was always good when you are looking to catch Australian Bass. Fishing with a light spin combo, I tied on an atomic soft plastic lure, which had plenty of action in the tail. My friends in the other two Old Town Kayaks were working the reed edges hard, but weren't having any luck! I decided to work a section of deeper water well into the middle away from the banks, and was happy to find a good school of fish holding in three meters of water. Aussie Bass are a fabulous Sport fish. They often hit extremely hard, and for their size, give a good account of themselves. After catching a few bass on soft plastics, I turned my attention to hard-bodied deep divers and they also did the trick!
The best fun of the day though, was heading towards dusk. Because of the warm weather, insects had started to hatch and with all this activity, I felt their might be an opportunity to switch over to surface poppers. On my first cast and retrieve a healthy 35 cm Bass exploded out of the water demolishing my surface lure. It wasn't long before I had 6 healthy bass to the Kayak. The Old Town Kayaks are so easy to fish from and it's a pleasure to be out on the water quietly sneaking up and scoring loads of fish.
