What Is the Difference between a Gazebo and a Tent?
Campers who are not that experienced with tents and tent types, may wonder what the difference is between a gazebo and a tent.
If you have been wondering about this, and want to learn more about the different types of tents on the market, be sure to read our article below.
What Is a Gazebo?
A gazebo is a form of portable shelter that uses a collection of metal poles to support a roof.
While a tent is used for sleeping, a gazebo is used to provide shelter for a temporary shop or food during a party or a fair.
What Is a Tent?
A tent could be described as a portable shelter made of fabric.
This portable shelter is usually supported by one or multiple poles and fastened with cords attached to pegs, which are driven into the ground.
What Are the Different Types of Tents on the Market?
There are many different types of tents on the market, being familiar with these tent types can help you to pick the perfect tent for your next camping trip. Learn about the different types of tents, and discover which tent suits you the best, by reading our information below.
The Basic Ridge Tent
The basic ridge tent is probably the best known tent in the world, with a design that has been around for many years.
The basic ridge tent has a pole at each end to hold the structure up, but they can also have a cross pole to keep a tent-shaped roof in place.
Ridge tents come in a variety of sizes, allowing you to easily find a ridge tent for the single camper to multiple people. No matter the size of the ridge tent, the tent remains stable, making it a good option in bad weather conditions.
The basic ridge tent does have one disadvantage with its limited height, so if you require a larger, family tent, there will be more suitable options available. Although if you only intend to use the tent for sleeping, the basic ridge tent will be perfect.
The Dome Tent
Dome tents are also referred to as flexible pole tents. They are a popular choice for festivals and hiking trips, considering their stability and light weight.
The dome tent is characterised by a half circle bend, where both ends of the tent are fixed to strong tape or a webbing strap. The tape and webbing strap runs across the base of the tent and is usually a part of the groundsheet of the tent.
Dome tents can have a square or hexagon shape, which depends on the amount of flexible poles used to pitch the tent. When the tent has two flexible poles, the dome tent will have a square shape. If the tent has three flexible poles, the dome tent will have a hexagon shape.
The dome tent is very stable when it has a smaller size, for example a dome tent for one or two people. The bigger the size of the dome tent, the less stable they tend to be.
The Geodesic and Semi-Geodesic Tent
A geodesic and semi-geodesic tent is rarer than other tent types. It is a tent that has poles that run all over the tent surface, which means it is the most stable tent on the market. Because of its stability, the geodesic and semi-geodesic tent is commonly used for camping in extreme weather conditions.
The most stable tent is the geodesic tent, given the fact that the semi-geodesic tent uses less poles than the geodesic tent. If you go camping in windy conditions on exposed terrain, we can recommend a geodesic tent, although a semi-geodesic tent is also an option if you choose a smaller model.
The Quick Pitch Tent
Many manufacturers have created some quick pitch tents, the perfect tent for someone who goes camping for the first time.
In order to be classified as a quick pitch tent, the tent must have a sprung frame incorporated in the fabric of the tent. Thanks to this sprung frame, campers can simply throw the tent in the air to set it up.
The earliest versions of the quick pitch tent were not suitable for poor weather conditions, but this has changed in recent years. The latest versions of the quick pitch tent are now a lot more robust and provide sufficient protection against rain fall.
However, they are still not suitable for extreme weather conditions such as extreme cold and snow.
The Tunnel Tent
When you are looking for a tent with the largest amount of free space, you will need a tunnel tent.
The tunnel tent provides a large amount of space thanks to the use of flexible poles, which are put together in a semi-circle.
However, there are also tunnel tents that use rigid poles for extra stability.
The Cotton Canvas Tent
Canvas tents are easy maintenance tents which have a much longer life span than nylon or polyester tents. Canvas tents can be easily retreated for water repellence & mould resistance.
Cotton canvas breathes and regulates humidity, which makes them a better alternative to nylon or polyester tents. Canvas does not transfer heat as quickly as nylon, keeping the tent interior cooler in warm weather and warmer during colder months.
The Pod Tent
A pod tent is one of the largest tent types on the market, as such, is most commonly used by families.
It contains several sleeping areas, which meet in the centre of the tent. This ensures a separate sleeping room for the children, but peace of mind for the parents.
