What are the essentials for a camping trip?
Whether you are new to camping, or a seasoned pro, deciding what to pack can be a challenge. However, there are a few essentials that we think that you will need. If you are hiking a long way before your trip, then you may need to strip back your list as you will need to carry a lighter load. If you are taking a tent or shelter, then you will also require accessories, mallet, and we recommend packing a clear candle for rubbing on any seams that drip. It is always a good idea to pack spares, and spare tent pegs can be invaluable.
Your sleeping situation again will depend on your needs, and whether you want to aim for a lightweight mat or an ultra-comfortable air mattress, it is important to sleep on something as this will significantly increase insulation. Choose a sleeping bag that is designed for the most extreme temperatures that you are likely to face. If you are taking a stove, then you may need gas or perhaps charcoal if you are relying on a fire.
Take pots and pans for your trip, cooking utensils, a bottle opener, and dinnerware for everyone who will be in attendance. Think about your camp lighting, with headlamps, lanterns and torches available at Anaconda, and always remember to pack extra batteries. Personal hygiene is a must, and sanitiser or anti-bacterial hand wash will help to prevent infections. Do not forget the importance of a First Aid Kit, Sun Cream and Insect repellent.
How should I care for my camping mat?
It is essential to inspect your camping area properly before setting it up, ensuring that there is nothing that is sharp enough to puncture the mat. After you have returned home, we recommend inflating the mat to provide that it is clean and still in good working order. If it has got dirty, wipe your mat with a clean damp cloth and a small amount of dish soap for any particularly stubborn stains. Always make sure that your mat is appropriately cleaned and dry before storing it in a cold, dark and dry place. Mould on your mat could potentially damage it, and be a health hazard on your future trips. We also advise keeping the air valve open when you are storing your mat as this will allow any moisture that is inside the mattress to escape.
