How do I get started in Kayaking?

Kayaks are simple to use and fun to paddle and open up a whole new world to explore. Picture yourself floating over crystal clear waters with coral and tropical fish passing below, catching surf and riding waves towards white sand beaches and exploring Australia's beautiful rugged coastlines, the options are endless.

But before heading out it's good to have some paddle skills under your belt.

At first be sure to practice your newfound hobby in calm protected waters with low wind and few motorised boats. Gear up so that you remain safe. Wear a Personal Flotation Device (PFD, or Life-Jacket) and preferably go with a friend.

Boat Adjustments: Adjusting your boat to fit your body is critical to having a good, comfortable and safe paddle.

Note that there are 2 primary points of contact between you and your kayak. The small of your back should be in contact with the seatback. Adjust the cockpit in such a way that you are sitting upright or even a little forward.

The balls of your feet brace against the foot rest or pedals that control a rudder (if applicable). Make sure the foot pedals are adjusted to match the length of your legs (if applicable).

In your search for the perfectly adjusted kayak, don't squeeze yourself too tightly into the boat. The fit needs to be snug enough to give you full control of the kayak, but loose enough so that you can exit easily if the need arises.

What to bring on a paddling expedition?

A paddle pal: Paddling by yourself can be dangerous, especially for newbies. Always take a fun paddling pal.

Safety gear: At minimum every paddler in your group should have a Personal Flotation Device, a light, rescue gear and a communication device.

Proper clothing: Dress not just for the weather but for the water temperature. Prepare to get wet! Layering is key for comfort and safety when kayaking.

On a more serious expedition you will need to take the classic "Ten essentials" along with you: Navigation (map and compass), Sun protection (hat, sunglasses and sunscreen), Insulation (additional dry clothing), Light (headlamp/torch), First-aid supplies, Fire (waterproof matches / lighter / candles), Repair kit and tools, Nutrition (extra food), Extra Hydration (emergency water supply), Emergency shelter.
