Exploring the Howqua Valley by 4WD

Easter is a great time of year for a 4wd trip up into victorias high country. The howqua valley is just south of Mansfield and is home to luscious green valleys and sparse peaks. It is also home to the historical mountain cattlemen and the legend of the man from snowy river.

The months during autumn and spring offer the most suitable conditions for a fun and safe drive. The bushfire season is over and (if you're lucky) the tracks are damp enough to keep the dust down.

Unlike most weekends in the high country the Easter break sees a lot of traffic on the mountain tracks and in the camp sites. Between the dirt bike riders, hikers, cyclists and drivers you are more than likely to be called on to lend a helping hand. All the more reason to pack your 4wd recovery gear and first aid to get yourself or someone else out of trouble. For a little extra peace of mind I also put an epirb device in the glove box.

The tracks are many and varied and will cater for all skills. Typically it is best not to rely on gps as they do not have the detailed map coverage required for the terrain. A topographic map is the most reliable form of navigation and you can pick one up for less than 20 bucks at the servo in mansfield on the way through.

Refer to the map key when studying which route to take, the line type and colour of each road marked on the map will signify it's difficulty level. Also pay attention to the contour lines - if they are too close together you may be in for a steep ride!

If you've got a long weekend coming up you should make your way past Mansfield and into those mountains, there are roads for every type of 4wd from your urban suv to your fully kitted out cruiser. Head for the summit to grab a happy snap of the whole alpine region then get down to the howqua river to set up camp for the weekend.

I dont think there's better way to unwind!
