New Year's Resolutions

It’s the old favourite New Year's resolution… ‘I’m going to get fit’. I know I say it each year and each year, it’s the one resolution I actually realise.

I am one of those people who loves to keep fit. I admit, like most people, it lags here and there during the year. The onset of winter makes it hard to get motivated, and the busy lives we lead these days with work and in my case, a 7 year old daughter, certainly interfere in my ‘me’ time. But I always have much more energy for those things if I am incorporating some kind of exercise into my life so the benefits always pay off. Not to mention the stress release it offers as a bonus.

There are so many ways to fulfil this annual promise to yourself that it actually becomes less of a chore and more about a way of life. And, it can also be EASY.

Don’t believe me? Here are a few of my own tricks for getting fit and keeping that New Years resolution.

Incorporate Bike Riding Into Your Regular Life

Instead of driving somewhere, have you considered riding a bike? To work perhaps, or even to the supermarket and organising for your groceries to be delivered so you can ride home again. Often two wheels can actually be faster than four – you can take bike paths and whizz past gridlocked traffic.

My family and I also love to seek out new and fun bike routes to cycle together on the weekends. Along the beach, on one of the city trails along the river, or out of town on any one of the fantastic bike paths such as old and historic rail trails.

Walking Each Morning

The first few mornings can be tough but setting your alarm an hour earlier and getting up with the sun to take a walk does wonders. I meet friends down at the beach and we walk along the path chatting, watching the sun rise and the world wake up. It is so invigorating and we hardly even notice we are doing ‘exercise’ as we chat away and then enjoy a coffee afterwards.

This works for me because it means I can sneak away before my daughter wakes up and we need to get ready for school and work. It is how I prepared for my recent trek along the Camino de Santiago in Portugal (link here to that blog) and it gives me a peaceful and fun start to my day.

"Get outdoors and walk"

Getting Fit At Home

This is one you don’t even need to leave the house for. Forget about what you’re wearing and what you look like and exercise in the privacy of your own four walls. There are so many ways to do it.

We have a treadmill that we love to run and walk on when we can’t get outside (you can watch TV or even have a work phone call while you are on it! Two birds…). Other ideas are to buy a punching bag and some boxing gloves for an invigorating workout. You can try your hand at yoga or pilates with fantastic at-home beginners kits available, and of course, one of my favourites, a simple skipping rope that you can use in the backyard always gets the heart rate up (you can even get digital ones these days that count your jumps, calories burned and time – brilliant).

Get Sporty

It is never too late to take up a new sport. Join a basketball club or simply take a ball to the local court and shoot some hoops by yourself or with some friends.

Regular hikes are incredibly fun and a fantastic way to challenge yourself and get fit. Go as a family or with friends, throw on some boots and a day pack and see parts of your state you haven’t seen before while enjoying the fresh air.

In summer, I love to try new aquatic activities such as bodyboarding, stand up paddleboarding (great for an all over workout, it uses almost every muscle in the body!), and surfing.

But swimming is my regular ‘go to’ exercise throughout the year. Give me an indoor or outdoor pool with a lap lane, a pair of goggles, and I will happily drift into my own world while working my way up and down. Swimming also uses almost every muscle without straining and is a fantastic cardio workout. It is so therapeutic for both the mind and body that it’s benefits stretch further than simple fitness.

Remember, if you are like me, and make ‘other’ New Years resolutions such as ‘to be less stressed’ and ‘spend more time with family and friends’, then exercise can actually solve all three! Just choose what interests you and set some goals. Good luck! Jen xox
