Pros and cons of bicycle helmets

Legislation about the wearing of bicycle helmets varies around the world, with some countries and continents making the use of helmets compulsory and other areas having no laws at all. A recent study carried out by Australian scientists seems to support the need for wearing helmets: A major study of bike helmet use around the world from more than 64,000 cyclists has found helmets reduce the risks of a serious head injury by nearly 70%. The study also found neck injuries are not associated with helmet use and cyclists who wear helmets reduce their chance of a fatal head injury by 65%.

However, opponents of bicycle helmets say that the mandatory wearing of helmets is putting people off cycling, and some go even further, linking the wearing of helmets with excessive risk taking.

Which bicycle helmet is best for me?

Bike helmets are designed to protect riders from head injuries, but there are several different types, and to the new cyclist this can be confusing. While all bicycle helmets sold by reputable retailers will confirm to the legislation, spending a little more may give you a “lid”that is lighter, and more breathable. The retention system often becomes more comfortable on a more expensive cycling helmet, too.

For competitive cyclists, aerodynamics can also be a concern. More expensive helmets will be wind tunnel tested, and will often provide a watt-saving figure as to how much energy can be retained thanks to the improved aerodynamics of the helmet.

What else should I look out for when choosing a bike helmet?

When researching bike helmets, you will see a lot of information on the term MIPS (Multi-directional Impact System). This is a way of designing helmets so as to reduce the damaging forces of a collision, therefore minimising the risk of injury as much as possible. This is done by ensuring multiple layers of protection, which absorb the different forces (rotational and linear) of a crash. More and more helmets use this technology.

Another thing to look out for is the newest range of bike helmets, which are referred to as “Smart Helmets”. These are often equipped with Bluetooth features and left/right indicator LEDs on the rear, as well as the ability to communicate hands-free on your phone. Some even have an SOS feature, which will detect a crash and then alert others via a text message.
