HOW TO CHOOSE THE BEST COOLER
Whether you’re out bush or at the local footy match, there’s nothing quite like cracking a frosty beverage out of an ice box. Anaconda has a huge cooling range, and to choose the best cooler or ice box for you there are a few things you should consider.
Size
When it comes to the size of your cooler, bigger isn’t always better. A cooler that’s bigger than you need will take up more room in your car, more ice to keep it cool and be more cumbersome to move around.
When you’re working out what size is best for you, think about how long you’re likely to use it for at any one time — are you planning to be away for a week or more, or are you just looking for something to get you through a Saturday afternoon?
Construction
A cooler’s construction doesn’t only impact how sturdy it is, it will also affect how well it keeps things cold. A good quality ice box will feature refrigeration grade insulation and a heavy duty, moulded plastic body with a sealable lid to trap the cold air inside and the hot air out. These kinds of ice boxes can usually hold ice for up to a week.
However, if you’re just looking for something to carry food and drinks for picnics and barbecues, an inexpensive hard or soft cooler will perform perfectly well. Just bear in mind that these kinds of coolers often won’t go the distance if you’re camping and want to keep things cold for more than a day or two.
COOLER TIPS AND HACKS
No matter what kind of cooler you choose, how you pack it and use it can have a huge impact on how effectively it performs. Let’s take a look at a couple of simple tricks you can use to get the most out of your cooler.
Packing your cooler
When it comes to packing your cooler it’s super important you have a good ratio of ice to food and drink if you want it to stay cold for any length of time. It’s recommended you have at least twice as much ice as food and drink to ensure your ice box or cooler stays cold for more than a few hours.
If you’re going camping, try and freeze as much food as you can before leaving as this will double up as ice and help to keep things cool. Freezer blocks and frozen water bottles are also a great way to keep things cold and reduce melt water in the bottom of your cooler.
Consider a two-cooler system
If you’re planning on taking a good supply of beverages with you, it can pay to have a dedicated drinks cooler. Every time you open and close the cooler, you’re letting cold air out and warm air in. Having separate coolers for food and drinks means your food won’t be impacted every time someone opens the cooler to get a drink, keeping perishables fresh for longer.
