Light output
Light output is measured in lumens, so the higher the lumens, the brighter the light. While this is a good indication of how effective the torch will be, bear in mind that lumens just measure the brightness of the beam - not the beam distance. Many torches will show both the lumens and the beam distance, so it's a good idea to take note of both.
Battery type and run time
Run time and battery type can vary significantly between brands and models. While a longer run time will nearly always be preferable, various battery types will suit different people. For example, rechargeable batteries can be really convenient - but consider whether a single charge will suffice for each use or if you're able to recharge them if needed.
