Which kayak should I choose?
Your choice of kayak depends entirely on where you will be paddling the most, and what kind of kayaking you intend to do.
Hopefully, these tips based on the type of water you intend to be sailing on will help. However, we would also like to remind you to stay aware of any changes in the weather or water conditions when sailing and always be safe.
- Lakes: In fair weather and still waters, any of our recreational kayaks will be more than suitable. Keep your eyes open for any whitecaps though!
- Coasts: Coasts can be a little bit more challenging, and you need to be more aware of the impact of waves, tides and currents. In warmer weather, a sit on top kayak can be the perfect boat, particularly, if you don't mind a dip in the ocean. However, on those colder days or when the waters are choppier, a sit-in boat may be better suited.
- Rivers: When in moving water, it is recommended that you have a kayak that has a rudder or a skeg. There are no absolutes in kayaking, but some experts do recommend a sit-on-top model for fast moving water due to better mobility.
Beginners may prefer a sit on top kayak, feeling assured by the increased safety and ease of paddling.
We understand that there are a number of variables to choosing the perfect recreational kayak for you. All of our products are tried and tested by our team, and you can always visit one of our stores where they would be happy to advise you or call our customer service team on 1300 558 990.
What is a rudder or a skeg?
Both rudders and skegs work to keep your kayak straighter in the water. A skeg is a simple drop-down fin whereas, a rudder goes to the back of the boat. A rudder is also adjustable, which allows you to respond to the water conditions at the time.
Is the length of the kayak important?
Again, your choice regarding length may depend on where you want to paddle. Longer boats are thought to cruise better, and they also have more storage space, whereas, shorter boats turn quicker and are easier to manoeuvre.
Is there anything else I need to remember?
We would like to take this opportunity to remind you again to always Paddle Safely. At Anaconda, we care about your safety and wellbeing, and we would like to remind you that you should never kayak alone and it is essential that you wear a life jacket at all times.
