Can I purchase fishing kayaks at Anaconda?

Yes, you can. Kayak fishing is extremely popular and with good reason – fishing is what kayaks were originally invented for! The Inuits, habitants of the Artic regions, developed this shape of vessel more than 4000 years ago for the purposes of fishing and hunting. These days, with the advances in materials and equipment, kayak fishing is an activity that can be enjoyed by people of all ages in fresh or salt waters.

What should I consider when looking to buy a fishing kayak?

There are a number of items to consider, including:

Length: The length of a fishing kayak can have a dramatic impact on how it will perform on the water. The first step to determining what length you need is to consider the type of water you will use it on. As a rule, shorter kayaks (less than 3.4 metres) are more manoeuvrable, and longer kayaks (3.7 metres or longer) are much faster. If your local waters consist of mainly small ponds, creeks, and backwaters you will probably want to opt for manoeuvrability rather than speed. If you’re fishing on bigger lakes, rivers, or the sea, choose a longer model. It’s also important to factor your body size into the equation, as you won’t want to be cramped for long periods.

Stability/width: Many fishing kayaks that you can purchase today are stable enough to allow standing upright, something that used to be unheard of. Even though stability is ideal for fishing, keep in mind that the stability may cause a kayak to be less manoeuvrable and more difficult to paddle efficiently. If you have a big body, or plan on standing up to fish, you will want to opt for a wider, more stable kayak. Narrower, less stable models will usually paddle easier, and are better suited to anglers who like to cover a lot of water during their fishing expedition.

Storage: Fishermen are notorious for having a lot of gear. For that reason, it is important to choose a kayak that has enough room for everything you plan to bring along on your fishing trip. Some models have integrated storage which is ideal for storing all that tackle. Sit on top kayaks often have moulded internal hatches, while many sit-in models have more open space in the hull for storing your gear.

Portability: The downside of the stability and storage found in the kayak of today is that these features can make them quite heavy. This is something you should take into consideration, especially if you are planning on travelling solo, or are planning to take your kayak into unknown waters. How far will you have to drag your kayak from the car to the water’s edge? And can you manhandle it back onto the roof of your car at the end of the day? In general, when purchasing a fishing kayak, the sit on top models are heavier than sit- in models.

Does Anaconda sell other types of kayak too?

Yes, as well as fishing kayaks, you will find touring kayaks, sit on top kayaks and kayaks for kids at Anaconda too.
