The Canning Stock Route: A 4WD Bucket List Adventure
For this edition of our 4WD Bucket List Destinations series, Elenya and Nick from Elnick Adventures are taking us to one of Australia's most epic off-road journeys: the Canning Stock Route.
This isn't just another 4WD track. It's remote, raw, challenging and incredibly
rewarding. From the driving and scenery to the camping and history, it's an all-round adventure - and they say it's possibly the best they've ever done.

Located in Western Australia, the Canning Stock Route runs from Wiluna in the south to Halls Creek in the north, stretching nearly 2,000 kilometres. It's widely known as the longest and most remote four-wheel drive track in Australia - and arguably the world.
The route cuts through three major deserts: the Gibson Desert, the Great Sandy Desert and the Tanami Desert. Unsurprisingly, that means it's a serious undertaking and not something to be rushed. This is true outback travel, so you can expect long distances, minimal traffic and absolutely no margin for poor preparation.
What Makes This Trip So Special
The Canning Stock Route is so unique because of its diversity. The driving changes constantly, and you encounter everything from rocky escarpments and rock gardens to soft sand dunes and desert plains.
Then there's the camping, which is easily some of the best we've experienced anywhere in Australia. Most camps are set around historic stock wells, many of which have been refurbished. Drawing water by hand by winding it up from crystal-clear wells genuinely feels like stepping back in time.
It's challenging. It's remote. It's beautiful. And it's an adventure in the purest sense of the word.
Highlights From The Track
Derba Springs
Our favourite campsite on the entire route has to be Derba Springs. After days of driving through arid escarpment country and sand hills, you suddenly arrive at this lush oasis, with green grass, gum trees and flowing water. It feels surreal, almost unreal, and it's absolutely stunning.
The Wells
Camping at the historic wells was a highlight for all of us. Some have interpretive signs explaining the history of the route, how it was built, and the hardships endured out there. Drawing water by hand was a simple pleasure and something our kids loved helping with.
Starry Nights & Escarpment Sunsets
At night, the stars are unreal - no light pollution, just endless sky. And during
sunset, the red escarpments glow in a way that photos simply can't capture.
True Isolation
In two to three weeks on the track, we saw around five other vehicles. That's it. The silence and solitude are unforgettable.
Planning & Preparation For The Journey
The Canning Stock Route demands serious planning, and there are a number of factors to consider before you set out.
Permits
You'll need permits to travel the route, which cost around $295 (at the time of our trip). This includes access and camping at the wells. Always double-check current requirements, as conditions and rules can change.
There are several Facebook groups and contact points where you can:
- Check track conditions
- Confirm recent rainfall
- Find out if sections are closed
Also, keep in mind that rain can shut the track instantly. When we did the trip, the northern section was closed due to wet weather.
Timing
The recommended window to tackle the Canning Stock Route is May to September. Outside these months it's simply too hot, and rain can become a major issue.
Water
We carried water containers with nearly 200 litres of drinking water for the five of us. We used water from the wells for:
- Washing dishes
- Washing clothes
- Bathing
Protip: For personal hygiene, wet wipes were a lifesaver!
Fuel
We carried around 350 litres of diesel in jerry cans. You need enough range to cover at least 1,000km of 4WDing to reach the halfway point, the only fuel stop on the track. Even then, fuel availability isn't guaranteed. If there's no fuel and you have to wait for a delivery, there is camping and a small general store.
Food
We planned for 2-3 weeks:
- Dry goods and dehydrated meals
- Frozen vegetables
- Simple, long-lasting foods
Our fresh fruit and veg lasted the first week, and after that, we got creative. Of course, bringing a portable fridge/freezer will help you enjoy fresh foods for longer.
Safety Gear & Essentials
You are truly on your own out there on the Canning Stock Route. If something goes wrong, help may be days or weeks away - and it may have to come via helicopter.
Our must-haves:
- Comprehensive first aid kit
- Snake bite kit
- Enough personal medication (plus extra)
- Personal Locater Beacons & Satellite Communicators
- Safety flag for dune crests
- Air compressor & tyre deflators
- Recovery gear
- Spare parts & tools
Camping & Cooking Setup Ideas
Here's how we handled our sleeping, cooking and bathing setup.
Sleeping
All five of us slept in a rooftop tent on top of our truck. We found this was simple, comfortable and effective.
Cooking
For cooking equipment, we kept things minimal. Our kit included:
- Butane camping stove
- Induction cooker
- Camp oven
- Cast iron skillet
- Pots & pans
- Basic plates and cutlery
Fires are allowed in many areas, which saved gas and made cooking easy. Our cast iron pan and camp oven worked well for most meals over the fire.
Bathing
Our showers were one of our favourite memories from the trip. With just a 20L bucket, a battery-powered shower pump and water heated over the fire, they were simple, effective and honestly among the best showers we've ever had!
Ease In Before You Begin The Trip
If you're new to remote outback travel, ease into it first. Do smaller trips, test your gear, and build confidence before attempting the Canning Stock Route. You need to be confident in your vehicle and your setup, and comfortable with isolation, too. It's a massive adventure, but an incredibly rewarding one.
