Shop Quality Overhead Fishing Reels At Anaconda

When you're targeting the powerful pelagic species that patrol Australia's offshore waters, you need a reel that offers uncompromising strength and direct control. The overhead reel is the undisputed champion for serious game and sport fishing. Built with a robust frame and a powerful drag system, these reels are engineered to handle species like yellowtail kingfish, dogtooth tuna and marlin. Their design provides superior cranking power and a direct connection to the fish, so you can turn a trophy catch away from structure and win the battle.

The versatility of a quality overhead reel is a key part of its appeal. From the precision required for high-speed jigging to the steadfast endurance needed for deepwater trolling, there is a model purpose-built for the technique. Features like a lever or star drag offer smooth, consistent pressure that won't falter under extreme duress, while their simple, robust construction stands up to the harsh saltwater environment season after season. This is a reel designed not just for a single fight, but for a lifetime of chasing the ocean's toughest opponents.

Choosing an overhead reel is a commitment to pursuing the ultimate angling challenges. It represents a step up for those who are no longer content with chance encounters and are ready to confidently target specific trophy fish. While there is a learning curve to mastering the cast and control, the reward is an unparalleled sense of connection and command. With an overhead reel in your hands, you're equipped with the tool that turns a strenuous fight into a masterful display of skill and power.

Overhead Fishing Reel FAQs

Are overhead reels suitable for beginners?

Overhead reels can be a bit trickier to use than spinning reels, so they're generally better suited to anglers with some experience. That said, they're not out of reach for beginners, especially if you're trolling or bottom fishing where casting isn't required. With a bit of practice, overhead reels can become a powerful part of your fishing setup.

What type of fishing are overhead reels best for?

Overhead reels are ideal for offshore fishing techniques like trolling, deep dropping, and heavy bottom fishing. They're built to handle large fish species such as tuna, snapper, kingfish, and coral trout. Their high line capacity and strong drag systems make them perfect for situations where power and control are key.

Can you use an overhead reel in both freshwater and saltwater?

Yes, overhead reels can be used in both environments, but they're primarily designed for saltwater fishing due to their strength and corrosion-resistant features. If you plan to use one in freshwater, it will perform well, especially when targeting larger species like cod or barra. Just be sure to rinse thoroughly after any saltwater use to keep your reel in top condition.

Can overhead reels handle braided line & monofilament?

Absolutely. Overhead reels are compatible with both braid and mono, giving you flexibility depending on your target species and fishing style. Braid offers better sensitivity and line capacity, while mono provides stretch and abrasion resistance. Many anglers use a combination of both with a braid mainline and mono or fluorocarbon leader.

Do overhead reels have drag systems suitable for big fish?

Yes, overhead reels are designed with powerful drag systems that can handle the intense pressure of fighting large fish. Most feature multi-disc or carbon drag setups, allowing smooth and consistent pressure during long runs and deep fights. Whether you're targeting big pelagics or reef dwellers, overhead reels give you the stopping power you need.
