Why do I need a bimini?

Sun exposure can become extreme if you are unprotected while out on the water, with nowhere to go for reprieve. One option for creating deck shade cover is by using a bimini top. Biminis are similar to a marquee or other outdoor shelter featuring a fabric top with open sides. Lightweight, sturdy, and easy to erect, a bimini is ideal for placing over the top of the boat cockpit, providing protection from the sun while still allowing airflow.

What type of boat suits a bimini?

A bimini can be installed on a number of different boat types, from small motorboats to larger cruisers. The top is held in place by a non-corrosive metal frame, and the unit can be folded up or down to suit your boating style. Anaconda biminis feature UV, mildew and water resistant fabrics that last for decades. Anaconda products include the Oceansouth 3 Bow Bimini for serious boating pleasure, with features that include:

  • Double wall strength
  • Aluminium frame
  • Solution Dyed Polyester ATLAS Canvas 320 gs/m2
  • Heavy Duty Marine grade nylon fittings
  • Adjustable Polyester Tension Straps
  • Unique Integrated Storage Boot

How to mount a bimini to a boat?

Bimini tops can be mounted in a number of ways, and Anaconda has all required parts and accessories in stock. The simplest bimini tops are anchored at the gunwales and can be adjusted forward and aft. Mounting a bimini is a DIY project suitable for almost anyone with a can-do attitude. Here are the tools, equipment and accessories you require for a 2 metre bimini top.

  • Eye straps with fasteners
  • Polysulfide sealant
  • T-square to square the deck hinges
  • Tape measure
  • Chalk to snap a line between the two deck hinges
  • Power drill and bits
  • Countersink bit
  • Screwdriver set
  • Spanners
  • Clean-up rags to wipe off excess sealant

Select the size: The width is determined by the distance between the points where the deck hinges will be attached. The bimini length and height can be adjusted to suit your needs.

Position the top: Ask a friend to hold the fully extended top in position so you can decide where the deck hinges are to be installed. The deck hinges must be exactly opposite and parallel to each other.

Mount the deck hinges: Drill mounting holes, ensuring the underside is clear of items such as hoses and wires. Countersink the holes and prepare the surface with sealant before screwing each deck hinge in place.

Install the top and eye straps: Bolt the bases to the deck hinges and erect the top. Eye straps work best when mounted horizontally. Attach the snap-hooks to the eye straps and use the buckles to evenly tighten the bimini top.
