What are paddleboards and what are they used for?

Paddleboarding whereby the person sits, lies or kneels on the board and uses a paddle to propel through the water. Stand up paddling can be practised on still waters such as lakes, canals or rivers, but is also enjoyed in a light surf, given a little practice! In a nation surrounded by the ocean, stand up paddleboarding is popular in all states. Some features and benefits of stand up paddle boards:

• Great for building up your core strength (and losing ab flab!)
• A board you can use to ride small waves, or on flat water.
• A fun and relaxing way to stay active and get back to nature.
• Surface grip - A better grip makes it harder to slip off.
• Underside shape - A curved bottom is less stable but easier to control.
• Tail shape - A wider, rounder tail is more stable but harder to control.
• Nose shape - Curved is best for surf waves - narrow for flat water and racing.
• Leash connection - Essential if you'll be using it to ride waves at the beach.
• Carry handles - Boards with handles are easier to get in and out of the water.
• Fins - More fins give you more control, and if they're tough they'll last longer.

What are SUPs made of?

Most SUP boards are made using a glass-reinforced plastic construction using polyester or epoxy resin together with a polyurethane or expanded polystyrene foam used in the core. Some SUP boards use a hollow wood construction instead of foam with epoxy resin. There are also inflatable SUP boards. The boards can vary in length from around 8 feet (2.4 metres) to over 12 feet (3.6 metres), and have features such as padded decks and concave hulls, as well as one or three surfboard-style fins in the stern for tracking. Shorter boards are often used in Stand Up Paddle Surf competitions (smaller boards are more manoeuvrable). Race boards, which range from 12 ft 6in to 14ft, are usually made of fibreglass or carbon fibre.

What to wear when standing up paddle boarding?

When stand up paddle boarding, the best clothes to wear are swimwear including board shorts and a rash vest for sun protection. Additionally, a PFD is important especially for beginners. In winter, a wetsuit is recommended for warmth. In summer, you can paddle board barefoot, in winter, you'll need some neoprene water shoes to protect your feet and a wetsuit for warmth.

Do I need to purchase a paddle separately?

How to inflate a stand up paddle board?

Inflatable SUPs are easier to carry and store, but like all inflatables, they can get punctures and suffer from sun damage so they may not last as long as a solid board. To inflate, you will need an air pump.
