Mid Layer Fleece

Mid layer is the insulation layer, trapping any warm air that's escaped through the base layer to keep you warm. Fleece is a practical mid layer for activity as it's warm but lightweight, insulates when wet and dries quickly.

Mid Layer Insulation

Down gives the best warmth to weight ratio of any insulation, but fails when wet as the feathers clump together and stop trapping air. Synthetic fill insulation tries to mimic down, they don't keep you quite as warm but will still provide warmth when wet.

Outer Layer Rainwear

The outer layer is about protection from the elements: Waterproofing, windproofing and breathability are key features. For a jacket to be fully waterproof, it needs a few different features:

  • A waterproof / breathable membrane
  • Seam Sealing
  • Waterproof zips

Fused between the layers of the jacket, the breathable membrane allows smaller molecules of water vapour (sweat) to escape whilst preventing bigger water droplets from getting through the fabric. Some jackets have a higher waterproof / breathable rating than others. The higher the rating the more waterproof or breathable the jacket.

Seam sealing simply means all seams on the garment on sealed to stop water enteringvia any stitching holes.

As with any stitching, all zips need to covered with a flap of fabric or waterproofed to stop water entering and be classed as a fully waterproofed product.

Softshell jackets are extremely versatile, with stretch for ease movements and are wind-proof. Most soft-shells will have a waterproof / breathable membrane, but no seam sealing. Not quite waterproof... these styles will keep you dry as long as the rain is not too heavy.
