Week 15: Gamakatsu/Evinrude North Coast Fishing Bonanza 2013
I love the excitement of tournament fishing. The planning, the tactics and the preparation all come together for the big event. Just recently I was up in Northern NSW catching up with my good friends from Gamakatsu, Paul and Michael Starkey who distribute this great brand of fishing hooks. It was sign on day for the northern fishing bonanza which Gamakatsu and Evinrude motors support each year. People were flocking to the event to sign in and I just happened to be present to see and feel the excitement of the gathering crowd.
It was a very friendly atmosphere and many kids came over to chat about what they had been catching recently around Ballina and what they were targeting in the competition. The competition kicked off at 8 pm and anglers were anxious to get away as quickly as they could to get to their secret spot in hope of catching the winning fish.
The weather gods were not so kind with a strong wind warning putting the breaks on anglers plans to head offshore to their favorite reef spots. The wind warning was relaxed the following morning and great fishing saw many anglers score some quality catches.
Best of all is the tournaments practice of catch, photograph on the tournament brag mat before releasing. There were lots of species caught in both junior and senior categories. This competition is a great catch and release event and I'm hoping to wet a line up there myself at next years tournament!
