Week 12: Anaconda Fishing with kids at Port Hinchinbrook

During the week I headed up to North Queensland to film an Anaconda Fishing With Kids segment chasing some tropical species. I headed out from Port Hinchinbrook with two young boys Dylan (8) and David (9) and a good friend of mine Peter Schramm who runs Fish Finder NQ. We needed to catch some live bait as our intention was to fish for Barramundi on the edge of the Hinchinbrook channel. We started cast netting the channel edges, where thousands of pop eyed mullet were holding up at the start of the run in tide. Wow these guys are hard to catch! They are an unusual fish with most of their head sticking out of the water. I swear they were watching me cast towards them and as the net was in the air, they would quickly swim out of harms way. I was lucky to catch a few normal mullet who weren't quite as smart. Dylan's father Gavin was helping us out with the camera boat and was trying his luck at cast netting as well. All of a sudden he was fighting more then a few mullet in his net, as he pulled in a 65cm barra! I've never seen that happen before, but what a great way to start our fishing trip with the kids.

We headed across to Hecate Point and anchored on the drop off in about 6m of water. The strong winds had muddied the water wide of the point, but their was a nice clean blue strip of water hugging the bank. Our live baits of mullet were tossed over the side and the boys held on tight to their Shimano rods and small 3000 size reels loaded with 30 pound braid and 30 pound mono trace. We used a simple running rig with a swivel attached a metre up from our 3'0 Gamakatsu hook and a ball sinker adding the weight to get the bait down.

First up, David's rod buckled and as line tore off the little Shimano spin reel, he was pumping and winding with gutso. A healthy blue salmon was netted and the boys celebrated with high fives all round!

Next it was Dylan's turn, and he did a great job battling a Barramundi to the boat! The barra wasn't a monster, but both boys were thrilled to get the chance to show off their awesome angling skills.

Head in store to stock up on all your favourite fishing gear, and you too can have a great day out on the water.
