What is the difference between Running, Sport & Other shoes?

Running shoes are purpose built for forward, heel-to-toe motion as you run. They'll help your feet withstand the repetitive impacts on the footpath or trail, while being as lightweight as possible. Generalist sports shoes such as cross trainers on the other hand, aren't designed to withstand the same level of impact force. But they are designed to withstand greater lateral force so are great all-rounders for different activities like gym workouts, strength training and aerobics.

While it can be tempting to use a pair of cross trainers on your runs, it's not a good idea as this will increase your risk of developing running related injuries in your feet, knees and heels. Similarly, running shoes probably aren't your best bet for activities like aerobics, tennis and gym as they won't provide the lateral support you'll want for these activities.

What to look for when buying Running & Sport Shoes?

The attributes you look for in your running or sports shoe will largely depend on the activity you'll be using the shoe for. Let's take a look at a few things to consider before making a purchase.

Material

Most running or sports shoes from reputable brands like Asics and Adidas will be made from material that is suited to the activity they're made for. For example, running shoes are usually made from strong, lightweight materials to help you move faster, while cross trainers are often a little heavier but offer more support.

Comfort

Comfort is important with any type of shoe, but this is especially true when it comes to sports and running shoes. If your shoes are not comfortable it can affect the way you move and this in turn can cause an injury.

Fit for purpose

Shoe companies have spent years researching how to customise shoes to support the wearer in a specific activity. For this reason, always wear shoes that are made for the activity you're doing as subtle differences in construction and material can make a lasting impact and strain on your body.
