Can I purchase baitcaster reels at Anaconda?

Yes, you can. At Anaconda, we stock a variety of baitcasting reels from leading manufacturers of fishing gear, such as Shimano, Shakespeare, Daiwa and others, suitable for both the beginner to the experienced and professional fisherman. Baitcasting reels feature different weights, varying gear ratios and ball bearings, for a wealth of choice for your targeted species of fish.

Why use baitcaster reels?

Baitcasting reels are also known as revolving-spool or overhead reels. They have a different mounting position because they rest on top of the rod, unlike most other reels. When casting, the fisherman uses his thumb, usually by pressing down on a button or a bar, to control the amount of line that is unspooled. Baitcasting reels are powered with multiple gears, meaning that one revolution of the hand-powered crank will result in multiple revolutions of the spool. This allows for a much greater amount of power when reeling in, perfect for catching bigger fish that will put up a greater fight.

Baitcasters, also known as “bait casting reels”, are for the more experienced anglers who want better control and accuracy. With a baitcasting reel, the spool rotates as you cast, meaning the inertia has to be strong enough to move the spool but not so strong that it creates a tangle of line. These types of reels require experience and skill and you will usually need to have patience and keep practising before you can use a baitcaster effectively.

What are the benefits and drawbacks of baitcaster reels?

The number one advantage for a baitcasting reel is accuracy. After many hours of practice with a baitcaster, you will be able to put a lure exactly where you want it. Baitcasting reels are often also sturdier than spinning reels, meaning they come into their own when fishing for heavier fish.

Drawbacks of a baitcasting reel include the patience needed to use a baitcaster effectively. At first, it might seem impossible to cast correctly, and if you don’t stop the spool after the lure lands, the line will keep feeding out, making a frustrating mess. They are also used for lures alone, so they don’t have the versatility of other reels.

What are the average costs of a baitcaster reel?

Here at Anaconda, our wide range of baitcasting reels makes it possible for you to spend as much or as little as you like. If you are trying your first baitcasting reel, you may want to spend around $80, but there are top of the range baitcasters available at around $200 too.

Does Anaconda sell other types of reels to?

Yes, spinning reels, still probably the most popular type of reels for many fishermen, are also for sale here at Anaconda in a wide range of brands and prices. Check out our whole range of fishing equipment, clothing, storage, accessories and other essentials to find everything you need before your next fishing expedition.
