WHAT ARE THE RIGHT BRAKES FOR MY BIKE?

There is a wide range of different brakes for bicycles on the market. Mostly, unless you are an ardent DIY-er, you will want to replace your bike's brakes with the same system that came with the bike, but some brake systems are better suited to certain types of cycling. Brakes are essentially split into two types - rim brakes and disc brakes.

Rim brakes are the traditional type of brake that you see mounted above the wheel. There are two types: calliper, which is one mechanism attached by a single bolt, and cantilever brakes, which have two arms mounted on each side of the fork.

Disc brakes are found near the middle of the wheel and can be compared to the brakes you'd find on a motorcycle. They have long been found on mountain bikes and more recently introduced to road bikes.

WHAT PARTS MAKE UP THE BRAKES?

Depending on the brake system your bike has, you may need to replace brake pads or brake cables.

Brake pads: There are different brake blocks/pads for different rim compounds and weather conditions. Brands offer wet weather specific pads - these are ideal for winter where the chance of rain is a lot higher. That doesn't mean you can't use them in the dry, as they are just designed for the wet for better performance than standard pads.

Brake cables: Ensure you have good quality cables fitted and greased upon installation. Correct maintenance of bike brake cables is imperative for your safety. Replace frayed or damaged cables immediately as any future damage could result in an accident.
