At Anaconda, we know how important it is to be properly dressed to cope with the temperature outdoors. Our range includes softshell jackets, womens waterproof jackets, insulated jackets that are ideal for use as winter coats and much more. With items from the biggest names in the outdoor industry, there's a womens jacket for every budget at Anaconda.

What type of jacket do I need?

Every woman will need more than one jacket to get through the season if she wants to be covered for all eventualities. Here are some of the considerations for various types of jacket:

  • Warm – if you are living in an area where the temperatures plummet in winter, or you are planning to go skiing this winter, a warm jacket like a puffa coat or duvet jacket, or similar, will be indispensable.
  • Waterproof – for walks with the dog, trips on the bike or standing on the sidelines cheering on family members at sporting events, a waterproof jacket is a must. Ideally one with a hood, and cuffs to stop the water from going up your sleeves too.
  • Stylish – if you like to dress up, and have to travel to events, you will need a smart and stylish coat to match your outfit. Make sure it is cut generously enough to wear a suit jacket underneath if that is what you’ll be wearing.
  • Casual – this is the sort of jacket that you can leave on the back seat of the car, or hanging on a hook by the back door, ideal for just slipping on when you are popping out to pick up the kids or get some shopping.
  • Cover-up – for summer evenings or days when the sun goes in unexpectedly, a lightweight fleece jacket will be just the thing to carry with you, ready for when you need that extra layer.
  • Vest – many activities outdoor mean that although you need to be covered up, you will still need to have plenty of freedom of movement. For this, a vest that leaves your arms bare is indispensable.

Which types of warm jackets can I get at Anaconda?

When it comes to warm jackets, you’ll be spoilt for choice. With many top brands as well as a wide choice of colours and styles at fantastic prices, you can get warm jackets for every occasion and activity here. A good warm jacket is imperative when the temperature drops significantly during the day or night. If you are physically active, you can usually generate enough body heat to keep you warm. But once you stop moving, your body temperature can quickly fall to a point where it becomes not only uncomfortable but also dangerous.

Depending on your preference, you can go for one warm jacket like a down insulated jacket that will keep out wind, snow and rain, or opt for a layered approach, with a base layer such as a thermal top, which keeps your body temperature stable, followed by a mid-layer like a fleece jacket or a soft-shell jacket, and topped with an outer layer that will keep the wind and rain off. This has the benefit of allowing you to remove a layer when needed if the temperature changes or you have exerted yourself and need to cool down a bit.

What are the benefits of thermal jackets?

Thermal insulation works on the principle of reducing heat flow. Heat flow is an inevitable consequence of contact between objects of differing temperature. Thermal insulation will provide an area of insulation whereby thermal conduction is reduced, or thermal radiation is reflected rather than absorbed by the object with the lower temperature.

Gases (including air) do not conduct heat in the same way as liquids or solids and are therefore a great natural insulator. By trapping the air in small pockets, such as between feathers, or in and around the fibres of wool or silk, heat transfer will be even more reduced. Many natural materials such as wool or down make great insulators, but also man-made synthetic fibres can have very good insulating properties. In addition, they can be lighter in weight and cheaper than their natural counterparts.

What features should I look for in a skiing jacket?

If you are going to be active on the slopes, there are certain extra features that you may want to look out for in your women’s jacket. Here are the top features to look out for:

  • Waterproof, breathable fabric will keep snow and rain out while letting your sweat escape at the same time.
  • Taped seams are essential if you want to make sure your jacket is fully water and wind proof, and a cover over your zip is also recommended.
  • A high collar is a great bonus. High collars can be pulled up over your chin, lips and even the tip of your nose to keep the wind off.
  • A hood is great, but make sure that it is big enough to go over your helmet if you will be wearing one, and that it has toggles or other closures so you can adjust the opening.
  • Extra-long sleeves or snow cuffs will help to stop snow from getting up your sleeves or your sleeves from riding up your arm during skiing.
  • Underarm ventilation. It seems strange, but even in the harshest conditions, you can overheat, especially if you have been active. Some skiing jackets now come with vents.
  • A lift pass pocket in your sleeve will save you having to produce your ski lift pass; the electronic sensors can read it through the fabric of your jacket.
  • Zipped inside pockets will help you keep phones and valuables safe and protected even when moving at great speeds.
  • A colour that will help you stand out against the snow can be a great bonus in an emergency. Bright colours such as lime green, pink and orange can be spotted from a long way away.
