What Features Should I Consider When Buying a Raincoat?
The features you should look for in a raincoat will largely depend on what sort of activities you plan on doing while wearing it. Will you be doing exercises like hiking or skiing? If so, will this be low, moderate or high intensity? Also, what climate will you be in? Will it be cold, warm or varied? Let's have a look at the different things to consider when choosing the best raincoat for you:
Waterproof Versus Water Resistant
The difference between a water-resistant and waterproof jacket is largely down to the fabric used to make the raincoat. Water-resistant material is woven very tightly so that water struggles to get through. But with enough rain, a water-resistant jacket will let some water in. On the other hand, waterproof fabric provides a complete barrier to water.
A plastic poncho is completely waterproof for example, but if you were doing any physical activity in a plastic poncho, you'd sweat so much that you would be just as uncomfortable as standing in the rain. That's why breathability is also important if you're going to be active in your raincoat or rain jacket. So, if you're planning on spending long periods in heavy rain, opt for a waterproof rain jacket. If you're just looking for a bit of protection from patchy rain, a water-resistant raincoat will more than likely be fine.
How warm you want your rain jacket to be is also an important consideration. After all, it's not always a good idea to opt for a warm rain jacket. If you're in a warmer climate and/or planning to be active, a thin shell with room for a base layer fleece or pullover if you need it might be a good option. If you are looking for warmth as well as protection from the rain, a softshell jacket could be worth considering.
