Waterproof vs water resistant

The difference between a water-resistant and waterproof jacket is largely down to the fabric used to make the raincoat. Water-resistant material is woven very tightly so that water struggles to get through. But with enough rain, a water-resistant jacket will let some water in. On the other hand, waterproof fabric provides a complete barrier to water.

A plastic poncho is completely waterproof for example, but if you were doing any physical activity in a plastic poncho, you'd sweat so much that you would be just as uncomfortable as standing in the rain. That's why breathability is also important if you're going to be active in your raincoat or rain jacket. So, if you're planning on spending long periods in heavy rain, opt for a waterproof rain jacket. How warm is a rain jacket?
