What Are The Different Kinds Of Camping Fridges Available?

Australia gets hot, and sometimes coolers and ice boxes just aren't going to cut the mustard when it comes to ensuring your food and drinks stay nice and cold when you're enjoying the great outdoors. A car fridge will keep things cold for as long as you need without having to top it up with ice. It will also give you far greater control over temperature, along with the option of a camping freezer. But before you can decide which camping fridge freezer is best for you, you'll need to consider whether you're looking for a dual-zone or single-zone unit.

Dual Zone Fridge Freezer VS Single Zone Car Fridges

Car fridges come in many shapes, sizes and configurations, but one of the first things you should look at is whether a single-zone or a dual-zone fridge freezer is best for your needs. The difference between the two is straightforward: dual-zone units have two compartments (or zones) which means you can run the unit as a camping fridge and a freezer at the same time. However, some models will also enable you to convert the whole unit to a fridge or freezer by removing the internal divider. Single zone units, on the other hand, only have one compartment so can only be run as a fridge or a freezer at any one time.

What Is The Best Way To Power A Camping Fridge?

Most camping fridges will run on 12/24V power, and many will come with a 240V transformer so you can plug it into mains power when it's available. If you plan to be running your fridge on battery power while you're parked up or camping, you'll probably want to get set up with a dual battery system to power your fridge/freezer. This means having your vehicle's original starting battery and an auxiliary battery which can be used to power your camping fridge and other 12V accessories. You'll also need to think about a power source that can charge your batteries when your car's not running such as solar panels or a generator. Our comprehensive guide on how to power a camping fridge will take you through the details.

Camping Fridge FAQs

What is a car fridge?

Basically, a car fridge is a portable fridge/freezer that is stored in your vehicle that keeps items nice and cold for as long as you need, all without needing to top it up with ice or ice packs. A portable camping fridge will also give you a far greater control over the internal temperature of your stored food items more than simply topping it up with ice.

How long will a camping fridge run on a car battery?

It all depends. For example, if you are having a 12V camping fridge running off of a 12V battery, then you would probably get anywhere between 12 to 25 hours of battery life. But this is assuming that the battery is a lead acid battery, because then it would only discharge to about 50% without shortening the battery life. The best way is to read the product description or ask one of our friendly staff.

What size car fridge do I need for camping?

It all depends on what your specific car fridge needs are. For example, if you are going camping with a big family, then you will probably need a 65-litre car fridge, whereas a 40-litre camping fridge is perfect for a solo adventurer. To help you make the best decision possible, check out our helpful Camping Car Fridge And Ice Box Buying Guide for all the information you need.

Does a camping fridge use much electricity?

It all depends on the size of your car fridge/freezer, as most will run anywhere between 1 to 4 amps per hour during a 24-hour period. If you are running just a car fridge with no freezer, then you would be looking at around 1 to 3 amps per hour being used.
