Buying Guide for Camping Fridges and Fridge-Freezers

A camping fridge is likely to be the dearest item in your camping kit so we have designed a buying guide to help with all important considerations when making this purchase.

At Anaconda we have a variety of Fridges and Fridge Freezers that come with a variety of features suited to all users and budgets. The first thing to think about is how you plan on using your camping fridge. A 4wd trip around Australia will have different requirements to a few weekends away family camping.

Here is a list of factors to consider when buying a fridge or fridge freezer:

1. Dual zone versus fridge/freezer: A Fridge/Freezer operates as a fridge or freezer, but not both at once. A Dual Zone Fridge/Freezer has two compartments and works as a fridge and freezer at the same time. Some dual zone fridges have a removable internal divider to allow the entire unit to be a fridge or freezer. This will use more power as most dual-zone fridges rely on just the freezer element to cool the entire fridge. Some dual zone fridges have separate lids and thermostats which allow you to control the temperature of the fridge and freezer individually.

2. Bigger isn’t necessarily better (We are talking about fridges people!): For 1-2 people a 40-50 Litre fridge will do the trick whereas if you are a large family you will be safer with 65 Litres plus. It is important to think about how much fresh food versus packaged goods that don’t require refrigeration. Consider both the length of your trip and access you will have to re-stock locations along the way. Keep in mind that vehicle size is limiting factor for the size of your chosen fridge.

3. Well-known brands are usually better: When it comes to fridges and fridge freezers big brands such as Engel and Waeco generally have better parts, performance and service after purchase and are worth the extra investment up front for peace of mind and reliability down the track.

4. Consider insulation: Fridges with better insulation use less power so look for fridges with thick and effective insulation – especially in the lid.

5. Toughness: The fridge you select need to be robust enough to handle your activity. Family camping that doesn’t incorporate any 4wd’ing will require a less tough fridge than a 4wd trip. Some of the stronger fridges Anaconda supplies are made to withstand the toughest terrain known to man in the Australian outback.

6. Compressor: This is the engine of your fridge and it is a good idea to do a little research into the compressor of your fridge to find one that will suit your journey and performance requirements. A good quality compressor will deliver exceptional efficiency and reliability over time.

7. Power Consumption: This is a good way to compare the efficiency of different fridges. Current draw of a fridge is measured in Amps per hour and most good electric fridges should use 1 – 2 amps per hour over a 2 hour period.

8. Additional Features: These don’t determine the quality of the product however certain features can be very beneficial and helpful. Some examples include battery protection, variable temperature control, a bung for easy cleaning, removable lid which makes contents accessible in hard to reach places.

9. You get what you pay for: This doesn’t necessarily mean you need the most expensive fridge we sell – if you are only going to use it occasionally then one of the cheaper options may suit your needs perfectly.

10. Remember Anaconda’s best price guarantee: If you do find a cheaper fridge/freezer we will beat the price by 10% if it is the same stocked item.
