Why should I wear sunscreen?
Exposure to the sun’s harmful rays can cause lasting damage to the skin, potentially resulting in skin cancer as well as accelerating signs of ageing and causing permanent damage. Experts recommend that you wear sun cream every day, not just in summer, as even on cloudy days up to 80% of the sun’s rays can still penetrate your skin. Your sun cream should have a Sun Protection Factor (SPF) of at least 15 and at least four-star UVA protection. Apply liberally and regularly to exposed skin at least twenty minutes before you go outside. Reapply often and remember to protect your lips also, look for a lip balm or lipstick that has a high SPF factor. Even if your sun protection states that it is waterproof, you should always reapply after going in the water, as it can be removed by sweating and towelling yourself dry. Even if you are wearing sun cream, it is recommended that you spend time in the shade when the sun is the strongest. Take extra care to protect children and always check the expiry date before use.
Why should I wear insect repellent?
Insect repellents help to prevent bites from insects such as mosquitoes, who are responsible for the transmission of serious diseases such as Malaria and West Nile Virus. You should apply repellent sparingly to exposed skin prior to going out and about, but always ensure that you have read the label carefully. Wear clothing that covers as much skin as possible and do not use repellents that have more than 10% DEET on children.
Will a higher percentage of DEET give me better protection?
DEET is the active ingredient in many insect repellents, and it is considered to be very effective. However, a higher percentage of DEET will not make your product work better, but instead, will allow it to work for longer.
