Snatch Straps FAQs

How to use recovery straps

When it comes to the correct and safe way on how to use recovery straps, all you have to do is follow these simple steps and you will be on your way in no time:

  • The first and most important step is to assess the situation. Will it be pulled backward or forward? Which snatch strap do you need to use? Where are the recovery points on each vehicle?
  • Now connect the recovery strap to the recovery points on both vehicles (we will explain that process further down). Remember to also leave around one-third of the strap loose to allow the recovery car to easily build momentum.
  • Clear the recovery zone and make sure all other vehicles and bystanders are clear from the area.
  • In the recovery vehicle, put it into first gear and begin slowly moving. If the bogged vehicle isn't moving after three attempts, then switch to another recovery method.

What is a snatch strap?

A snatch strap is a piece of recovery equipment that is used to assist in recovering vehicles that are stuck in tough terrain such as mud and sand. Snatch straps are typically made from webbing material that is fully capable of around 20% stretch when under load. It is this signature stretching that allows a snatch strap to store kinetic energy, which is crucial to pulling stuck vehicles from out of the bog.

How to attach a snatch strap?

When it comes to attaching a snatch strap, there are two main methods that can be applied, and each method will depend on your recovery situation.

  • Method One: This is an extremely simple method of inserting the pin directly through the eye of the snatch strap - that's all there is to it. The pin is incredibly strong and would require around 10 tonnes of force to break the pin. However, this isn't the best method if there will be a significant amount of side pull.
  • Method Two: This method is the most common and preferred way of using the snatch strap. Using a special device that is fitted onto the tow hitch, the shackle on the snatch strap can be fully threaded through and can be rotated vertically or horizontally, depending on what angle better suits the recovery.

What size of recovery strap is best?

When it comes to choosing the best size for your recovery strap, it all depends on how much extra length you will require in the recovery. The most common sizes are typically in the range of 30 ft to 20 ft and will ensure that you have enough space to get a better footing and have increased traction during the recovery phase.
