How does a transducer work?

With the transducer turned on, a sound wave emitted from the transducer travels through water and returns a signal when the sound wave bounces off a fish or other object in the water. The echo reaches the transducer, which then converts the ping (sound) to a readable frequency that travels to the sonar receiver.

What is a transom mount transducer?

As the name implies, a transom mount transducer is mounted to the transom of the boat, usually protruding under the boat's hull. Transom mount transducers are the most popular style of external transducers as they are adaptable to almost any hull shape. These transducers provide exceptional sensitivity even in deep water, particularly if the boat is static or travelling at low speeds.

Transducers are mounted in a position where there is an even flow of water over the transducer surface, with as little disturbance as possible. They function optimally when mounted low under the hull, away from propellers, rudders and hull protrusions that may provide false readings.

As a general guideline, the ideal location is on the centre line of the boat at its lowest point. This will be on the bottom of the bilge near the stern. It may require a little trial and error to locate the perfect position. You can also experiment with boat speed to ensure the depth reading isn't scrambled. Finding the ideal location for your transducer is best performed on a calm-water day.
