What are Kayaks?
Kayaks are small lightweight watercraft which are propelled and steered using only a double-bladed paddle. Most kayaks sold are designed to carry one person, but there are also tandem kayaks built for two people, which are great for exploring bodies of water with friends and family.
For thousands of years, kayaks have been made out of wood. Modern kayaks are now built using CAD and materials like fibreglass, Kevlar, plastic or poly-fabric, among many others.
What types of Kayaks does Anaconda sell?
Kayaks are extremely versatile and can be used for recreational exercise, sightseeing, whitewater rafting, fishing or touring long distances in freshwater or saltwater. If you have a specific purpose in mind, it’s best to spend some time to choosing the right type of kayak so you don’t waste time and money on something that doesn’t have the features you need or provide the performance you’re looking for.
The two main types of kayaks Anaconda sells are Sit-On-Top Kayaks and Sit-In Kayaks.
Sit-In Kayaks are inspired traditional wood kayaks. To ride a sit-in kayak, you climb in through an open cockpit. Your entire lower body is enclosed inside the cockpit. Some kayaks even have a skirt that wraps around your waist that seals the cockpit from water splashes and rain. This makes paddling in cold water more pleasant. If too much water gets in or if you tip over a Sit-In Kayak, you’ll have to drain out the water from shore.
Sit-On-Top Kayaks evolved from surfboards fitted with backrests to adapt them for paddling. You sit on top of the kayak with your entire body exposed to the elements, which makes them very easy to get in and out of. Sit-On-Top Kayaks are more popular for leisure or recreational use, as well as for use in warm weather.
What kayak does Anaconda recommend for beginners?
For beginners, Sit-On-Top kayaks are much easier to learn on because they are a bit wider which makes them more stable. Anaconda sells sit-on-top junior kayaks, which are just the right size for children as young as 5.
If you want to use a kayak for fishing, a sit-on-top kayak is often preferred because it allows you to easily access any gear you may need and it doesn’t get as hot as sitting inside a sit-in kayak all day long.
If you’re looking for a long distance touring machine, or something that’s fast and responsive, a sit-in kayak is narrower and usually much lighter than a similarly sized sit-on-top kayak.
Most of the kayaks we sell are hard body kayaks, but Anaconda also carries inflatable kayaks which are easy to store and transport.
