Top 5 lures to get you excited about fishing again

Fishing is one of life's simple pleasures. But, as experienced anglers will tell you, in order to reap the rewards, knowing where the fish are biting is only part of ensuring a great day out on the water.

Whether you're fishing in fresh or saltwater - from the Territory to Tasmania and everywhere in-between - having the right fishing gear is essential and having a good selection of lures will be an important part of your day out.

If fishing is something you've only recently taken up, and you're keen to know more, lures are a type of artificial bait designed to imitate a fish's prey and/or attract a fish's attention. They use movement, vibration, flash, noise and colour to attract fish.

Many lures are equipped with one or more sets of hooks that will hook the fish when they strike the lure. Most lures are designed to elicit a strike resulting in a clean hook up. Many lures are commercially made but some are even handmade.

If you're keen to try something new or you want to increase your catch rate, try adding some lures to your tackle box. We've done the hard work for you and we've put together a list of some of our favourite lures matched to your region and the types of fish they're designed to catch…

Cranka Crab Lure

Cranka Crab Lures Make A Handy Addition To Your Tackle Box

Used primarily for landing bream but also capable of delivering good results when snapper are on the bite, the 50-millimetre Cranka Crab lure makes a handy addition to your tackle box. Best fished on the drop, on a slack line along vertical structures, this lure can also be used to fish around other submerged structures such as rocks and timber.

The Cranka Crab is available at Anaconda in all states, excluding the Northern Territory.

Chasebaits Flick Prawn

Chasebaits Flick Prawns

The Chasebaits Flick Prawn is an ideal lure when fishing for Barramundi and Mangrove Jacks. As an extremely realistic prawn presentation, it is designed to replicate a real prawn, the Flick Prawn is incredibly realistic, made from ultra durable and flexible 10X material for both ultra life-like finishes and movement.

Available only at Anaconda in the Northern Territory, Queensland and online, the Chasebaits Flick Prawn is best fished with a hopped retrieve among structures such as mangroves, rock bars, and even pontoons and jetties.

Mustad Ink Vader

Mustad Ink Vaders

The Mustad Ink Vader lure is perfect for hooking all types of reef species. This 60g lure is built to look and move exactly like a live octopus, even squirting imitation ink from tablets that can be added to the head cavity. Coming pre-rigged, it can be fished straight out of the box in a lift and fall method or by letting it sink to the bottom and vertically jigging in the zone.

The Mustad Ink Vader is available at Anaconda stores right across Australia and online.

Chasebaits Budgie Smuggler

Chasebaits Budgie Smuggler

Designed primarily for hooking Murray Cod, the Chasebaits Budgie Smuggler can also be used to target Australian Bass and Saratoga. It's designed to imitate the most common birds that big fish feed on - as The Smuggler walks, the wings 'splash' on the water and make a very noticeable blooping noise, while the wide body action attracts the attention of nearby fish.

The Budgie Smuggler is best fished around structures with a slow roll retrieve with multiple pauses, and is available at Anaconda in all states except the SA, WA & TAS.

Shimano Sephia Squid Jig

Shimano Sephia Squid Jigs

Used for squid and calamari - and with a design inspired by native baitfish and prawns - the Shimano Sephia Squid Jig range is well-regarded by Australia's calamari and squid anglers. It's best fished at depth over weed beds with a sharp-hopped retrieve with several pauses in-between, allowing it to achieve depth again. The squid will often hit the jig whilst it is dropping back down to the weed bed.

Available at Anaconda in all states except the ACT, the Sephia Squid Jig range features a high-quality SUS 304 Japanese stainless crown for sharpness, strength and rust-resistance.
